Last Wednesday was Ash Wednesday. Usually we go to church in the evening with the whole family, but this year I decided to attend mass with my sons school. That meant my youngest was not going to be in preschool and he would be coming to church with me, in the morning. His MOST spunky time of the day. I should have known that this would be trouble……
It started out okay – I had a baggie of cereal for him to snack on. Then it was time to go up and receive Ashes. I held his hand and we walked up to the Deacon. I received ashes and then he moved his hand towards my three year old son. As he gave him ashes, my son screamed – ” DON’T TOUCH ME!”
The Deacon looked at me as to what he should do and I just grabbed my sons hand and walked back to our pew. Instead of a cross all he received was a dot. Plus, the school principal had seen it all. She had a smile on her face so I knew she felt sorry for me, but I was embarrassed none the less.
He squirmed around throughout the rest of mass, until it was now time to go up to receive communion. When a child goes up for communion in our church, the communion minister blesses the child. As we approached the priest, my son looked at him and said – “NO! GET AWAY!” The priest put his hand near his head and my son yelled -“I don’t want your blessing.”
Out of the mouths of babes……Such a proud mom moment!
